Settings

How the Settings panel is organised and how to find an option by name.

View Markdown

The Settings panel is organised by what the person wants to do, not by where the code lives. That means you find things by the task at hand, not by the module that implements them.

The four groups

Group What lives there
Personal This app, on this machine: appearance, alerts, shortcuts, privacy
Assistants Who answers and with which account: assistants, accounts, voice and computer use, orchestration
Projects The work: projects, workspaces, terminal, saved commands, Git and services, SSH hosts, browser, mobile emulator
System Reading, and what you only touch when something breaks: usage, advanced

Searching for an option

There is a search field at the top of Settings. It searches by option name and takes you straight to the section it lives in — without needing to know which group it belongs to.

Search also finds alternative names the same option had on other screens, which helps when the label you remember is not the current label.

The rule that avoids confusion

An entry in the navigation is not proof that the feature is available.

Three reasons for that:

  1. Sections filtered by build flags. Part of the sections is only mounted under a build configuration condition. When the condition is false, the section simply does not exist in the navigation.
  2. Desktop-app-only sections. Some sections are not mounted in the browser client, because they depend on something only the installed app has.
  3. System-only sections. A control that exists only on Windows or only on macOS does not appear on other systems.

That is why this documentation describes the sections one by one, instead of listing everything the product has ever had.

The documented sections

Beyond these, the Projects, Workspaces, Terminal, Saved commands, Git and services, Accounts, Orchestration and Browser sections exist in the app; they are covered by the pages of their own domains.

Limits

  • Nothing on this page promises a section that depends on a flag. If you cannot find a section you remember seeing, it may be filtered in the version you installed.
  • The grouping is product intent. The exact labels should be read on the screen you installed.
