Paths, system and external apps

Copy a file's path, reveal it in the system file manager, open in external editors, and promote a folder to a project.

Copy the path

  • Absolute path and relative path are distinct items in the row menu.
  • With multiple selection, the labels go plural and the action copies the set.
  • The editor header also offers copying the path, and the gutter menu copies the path with the cursor’s line number.

The relative path is relative to the workspace — it is the format you paste into a command, an issue or a message to the agent.

Reveal in the system file manager

The label changes per platform:

Platform Label
macOS Finder
Windows Explorer
Linux open the containing folder

Opening a local path can be blocked by remote connection configuration. In a remote worktree, revealing in the system does not have the expected effect: the path belongs to the host, not to your machine. Use download when the goal is to have the file locally.

Open in external applications

The panel’s action bar has open in — file manager or configured editors — and an item to customize the applications.

  • The application list comes from your preferences.
  • The file manager label also depends on the system.
  • If the opening fails, the app shows a notice telling you to check the configured command or manager.

Opening in an external app changes nothing in the workspace: it is a system window pointing at the same folder.

Add or promote a folder to a project

A folder inside the workspace can become a project:

  • Add as project — creates a project from the folder.
  • Promote to project — the same intent, for a folder already recognized as a candidate.

Availability depends on the folder being treatable as a project. The action opens the project creation flow already filled with the folder’s data.

The project is the unit that opens the screens and defines the git repository. Creating a project from a subfolder creates a new unit of work — it is not the same as browsing the tree.

Limits

  • Reveal in the system and open in an external app depend on the operating system and your preferences; on a remote workspace, the path is not local.
  • Copy path uses the workspace’s format: check whether you need the absolute or the relative one before pasting.
  • The first three actions on this page do not change files.
